A wave of EVs leased back in 2022 and 2023 are now coming off those leases, and industry analysts expect roughly 400,000 additional off-lease vehicles to hit the market in 2026, a large share of them EVs. That's pushed used EV prices down and supply up, so it's a particularly good time to shop the used market if the new-vehicle price tag is holding you back from going electric.

According to reporting from Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB), Georgia drivers could save more than $2,000 a year by switching from a gas-powered vehicle to an EV.
The savings come down to simple physics. GPB cites a recent report from the Zero Emission Transportation Association (ZETA), which explains that internal combustion engines lose about 80% of their fuel energy, while EVs lose only about 11% of their energy during operation. That efficiency gap means more of what you pay for actually moves your car forward.
Electricity prices also tend to be more stable and lower than gas prices. At the time of the GPB report, Georgia's average gasoline price was $3.79 per gallon, compared to a national average of $4.26, while the average cost of charging at home was about $0.15 per kilowatt-hour. As ZETA research director Corey Cantor told GPB, drivers see the biggest savings when they have relatively low electricity prices paired with higher gas prices, a combination that's increasingly common as gas prices fluctuate across the state. Are Electric Vehicles Cheaper to Own Than Gas Cars Over Time?
The savings extend well past the pump. Comparing the monthly cost of fueling a gas-powered car to charging an EV, using Georgia Power's dynamic pricing structure and typical annual driving distance, the difference is striking: filling a gas tank runs about $162 a month, while charging an EV to cover the same distance costs roughly $22.
That gap matters most for households where transportation costs eat up a larger share of the budget. Switching to an EV can cut a low-income household's mobility burden, the share of income spent on getting around, from nearly 13% to less than 2%.
Dory Larsen, the senior electric transportation program manager at the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, has seen firsthand the savings from switching to an EV. She points out that electricity costs roughly a third of what gasoline costs to cover the same distance, and without oil changes, timing belts, or many of the other routine repairs a gas engine needs, maintenance bills shrink too. Add it all up over the life of the vehicle, and many EV owners come out ahead even with a higher sticker price at purchase.

How Do Electric Vehicles Improve Air Quality and Public Health in Georgia?
